"Marketing" versus "Selling."

Dear Coach: Settle an argument: Marketing and selling usually mean the same thing.

Coach Says: Some people do use "marketing" as a euphemism for "selling." That's a great way to set some pretty unrealistic expectations which, in turn, helps generate a hefty dollop of frustration--so don't use the two words to mean the same thing.

Marketing and selling are not the same thing.
  • Marketing is whatever you do to gain your prospects' attention, and regain your clients' attention.
  • Selling happens when both parties (prospect and you) agree to evaluate the business fit.
If you don't like the word "selling," use "business development."
